College Bound?
Here's some great information for parents and high school students to help them out planning for this summer. If you know of any other programs or info you feel would be valuable, please email us and let us know what it is.

Summer Programs:
- USF 2006 Summer Program in Mathematics, Computers, and Science For Gifted and High Achieving Students: two programs offered: Level I for 9 th and 10 th graders; Level II for 10 th through 12 th graders. Programs meet Monday through From Cost is $550. Deadline to apply is 5/1.Brochures are in Guidance.
- Driver’s Education Courses: Non-credit Driver Education Courses are being offered 6/5 – 6/28 at several area high schools. For more information and pre-registration, call the Department of Adult and Community Education, 813/276-5654, ext. 260.
- Summer Engineering Institute at USF: USF will host the 30 th annual Summer Institute for teachers and students, 7/7-16 at USF. The institute will offer special programs and competitions. - University of Alabama Summer Business Program : The Capstone Business Academy at the University of Alabama is searching for juniors interested in an education and career in business. The summer program offers challenging on-campus workshops with faculty and professionals and trips to Atlanta to meet executives of Fortune 500 companies (including Home Depot, Cingular, Coca-Cola, CNN/Turner, Kimberly-Clark, and UPS) and tour their companies. - USF Minority Summer Residency Program for Business and Accounting: Minority students interested in participating in USF’s Summer Residency Program (in June) need to come to Guidance so they can be nominated. The program deadline is 4/14. The program, sponsored by the Florida Certified Public Accountants, will focus on business with an emphasis on accounting. - USF Paid Summer Internship Program Opportunity: The USF Collaborative for Children, Families and Communities is offering the Amy Quinlan Summer 2006 Internships in Community Based Research. Eligible students must demonstrate leadership, have some computer experience, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The program is a paid internship and begins 6/5 and lasts approximately 8 weeks, ending 7/27. Students will work 26 hours per week Monday through Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Again, applications are in Guidance and must be completed and turned in by 4/21. This is an excellent opportunity to join the USF team studying the roles communities can play in helping today’s youth succeed and thrive. - USF College Reach-Out Program and Project Upward Bound Programs Are Open – Applications Are In Guidance For 9 th and 10 th Graders: Applications for USF’s College Reach-Out Program (CROP) and Project Upward Bound (PUB) are now available in Guidance. College Reach-Out is open for 9 th and 10 th graders. Project Upward Bound is for 10 th grade only. These are special programs that provide students with academic tutoring in the areas of math, English/reading, social studies, science, Spanish, FCAT, PSAT, SAT and ACT, as well as guidance and personal counseling services. The programs are FREE to students. To qualify, a student must maintain a 2.4 GPA and be from a low-income family. Currently, applications are being accepted and reviewed for the 2006 Summer Enrichment Program, a six-week summer program from 6/12 – 7/13. This is an excellent program and a great opportunity for students, and it’s all free. For more information, pick up an application in Guidance or call 813/974-9261.
- UCF Burnett Honors College Summer Institute: 3-week program for students interested in computer science and computer technology, 7/9-29 at UCF. For more information, go to http://www.bhcsi.honors.ucf.edu, or call 407/823-0846.
- Florida Institute of Technology Civil Engineering and Construction Managment Program: workshop for students entering 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grade, offered 7/24-28. Registration form is due 5/30. Take a Florida College Tour This Summer
Florida College Tour is a great way to visit the four major Florida universities (USF, UCF, UF and FSU). You can sign up for a three-day, two- night tour at www.floridacollegetour.com. Cost is $185. Students start out at USF, travel to UCF and spend the night on campus then travel on to UF then FSU to spend the night. Parents can attend also. You’ll visit campus, stay in the residence halls, meet students and professors, see what college life is all about, and meet with admission counselors.

Cost for SAT I Reasoning Test is $41.50.
Remember: You are signing up to take the SAT Reasoning Test, NOT the Subject Tests. Don’t forget to list four colleges you may want your scores sent to, otherwise you will have to pay an additional fee to send your test scores when you apply to college. Test scores are not on your high school transcript.
ACT Test Dates
- 6/10 (registration deadline 5/5)
Apply at www.act.org
Cost is $29 (optional writing test $14)
Remember: You will need your High Schools CEEB test code number when you register for the SAT and the ACT.

- Asthma and Allergy Foundation Summer Camp needs camp counselors: The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is looking for volunteers to be camp counselors for their one week camp 7/8 through 7/14 at the Rotary Camp in Brandon .
